Setting a strategic direction for a rural district hospital |
Following an intensive programme of assistance to the board of a small rural district hospital aimed at building strengthened competence among directors, we partnered rejuvenated directors and a highly enthusiastic CEO in the design of a new strategic direction for the service into the coming years. Directors were keen to maximise the financial assistance from Government while also taking advantage of opportunities to build a strong user-pays arm to the overall health service.

Working with the board as a whole and with a Strategic Direction Working Party we used a wide range of strategic thinking and analysis tools to assist the directors to understand the operating environment and to explore possible options leading to the eventual adoption of a strong and clear statement.

From this, the CEO developed an operational strategic plan as the basis for his implementation of the board's direction statements and his strategic reporting to the board.
